| And life goes on… | | | MUNISH GUPTA Jammu, Dec 31: It is not the same this time. First the recession and then the Mumbai terror attacks, did dampen our spirits to celebrate New Year. We did empathize with the families who lost their loved ones and took out candle light marches in memory of their sacrifice. But then, we also have an inherent tendency to forget unfortunate events and live in the present. And that is exactly what we call human nature. Move on! In fact, most of us already have or at least are trying to do so and what better occasions like New Year for a fresh beginning. Though the bashes this year won't be as grand or flamboyant as previous years, but they for sure will help in diverting people's mind. Heavy booking at hill resorts shows that people are returning to the normal mode of life. Hotels and clubs in the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir have unanimously decided not to hold gala functions to celebrate the New Year, in the wake of the Mumbai terrorist attacks, in which hundreds of people, including the top police officials, were killed. The hotel industry has decided that there would be no ‘halla-gulla’ programs, including live concerts, dance items, parties and cocktails at the end of the year, one of the officials of Jammu Hotels Association said. ''The Mumbai attacks were not restricted to its boundary walls, but it was an attack on India,'' one of hotel managers said, adding the nation is suffering from terrorism, so by not celebrating New Year, we will pay homage to the victims. At least 197 people had been killed and over 300 injured in different terrorist attacks in the Hotel Taj, The Trident and Nariman House, in Mumbai on November 26. ''The nation should stand united against the menace of terrorism and also at the time of crisis. The Mumbai incident has hurt countrymen, so we should not forget the sacrifices of those who died for our well being,'' told Rahul a businessman. The enthusiasm and passion to celebrate the New Year with a bang is missing in Jammu hotels, restaurants and clubs. Moreover, they have not yet geared up with the preparations. While talking to the Early Times SSP Jammu Manohar Singh said that State Police has made adequate security arrangements in the whole Jammu on this occasion with more intensive checking and allied precautions at all the venues where new year celebration s are going on. He stated that all the vehicles are also being put to intensive checking at different points of the routes, adding that to ensure proper watch over the movement of people in crowded places we have also deployed security personnel in civvies. |
