Cong wants lead role | | | The Congress has claimed that a meaningful and winnable coalition alliance is not possible without its role. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh during the last leg of Bharat Jodo Yatra said, “Reality number one is that Congress must be the pivot or fulcrum of any opposition platform without the Congress no opposition alliance is relevant or meaningful.” The Congress Party is going through a lean patch after being ousted from power in the Centre in 2014. It has been finding it hard to make a comeback as the rising popularity graph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has eclipsed most of the political parties in India. PM Modi’s rise has made all the opposition parties realize that if they have to stay relevant then they will have to come together. The Congress is trying to send a message that it has to lead from the front and all the opposition parties should handover the baton to it. The opposition parties are aware of the fact that winning 2024 parliamentary elections won’t be an easy task as PM Modi has emerged as one of the strongest leaders in the country. The opposition wants to make an attempt to wrest the power from BJP. But many leaders know it very well that winning parliamentary polls won’t be a cakewalk. The Congress has announced that the opposition parties should make the “grand old party” as the torchbearer and others should fall in line. The idea is not that bad. But the Congress before bringing the opposition together needs to put its own house in order. It has to take steps to end the infighting within the party and keep the flock together as the Congress leaders have developed a habit of changing their party. Since the day Malika Arjuna Kharge has been elected as the president of All India Congress Committee, the debate over who leads the party has ended. Rahul Gandhi is not seen poking his nose into the affairs of the party and it appears the seniors have been entrusted with the responsibility to manage the affairs of the party. Jairam Ramesh has moved the proposal to put Congress on the top but it remains to be seen whether the opposition agrees to it or not. |
