Awareness-cum-training programme on FPOs organised

REASI, Feb 1: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu organised one day awareness-cum-training programme on 'Farmers Producer Organisations' here today at Sirah village of Panthal block in Reasi distt. of J&K which was enthuastically attended by a number of farmers of the area. The programme was organised under the able guidance of Director Extension, Prof.SK Gupta of SKUAST-J. Dr. Banarsi Lal, Scientist &Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi initiated the programme with the warm welcome of participants. He elaborated the concept and objectives of Farmers Producer Organisations (FPOs) and group dynamics. He urged the participants to avail the benefits of scheme and enlightened the scope of FPOs in hilly areas. He added that FPOs can provide benefits to the farmers by improving the livelihood security to the small and marginal farmers of these areas. He discussed on Farmers Interest Groups (FIGs) and narrated that the FPOs can become a vehicle of change for tackling the socio-economic conditions of the farmers of hilly areas. He also discussed in length about the formation of Board of Directors and bye-laws required for FPOs. He spoke on lemongrass, spices and vegetables production technology and urged participants to start their micro-agrientrepreneurships in the area so that their income and employment can be enhanced. Bharat Bhushan, Agriculture Extension Officer discussed on the value addition in agriculture for more profits. He stressed on the collective work culture and ease in marketing in FPOs. Rohni Mishra from SKUAST-J informed that FPOs will facilitate the farmers to sale their farm produce such as lemongrass, spices and vegetables in a collective way. She narrated that FPOs can make timely support to the farmers by providing the backward and forward linkages to the farmers. The other officials from SKUAST-J also interacted with the farmers and also spoke in length on the formation and management of Farmers Producer Organisations (FPOs). A field visit of progressive lemongrass growers fields was also arranged during the programme. During this occasion the participants asked various quarries regarding FPOs which were answered satisfactorily by the officials. An awardee farmer, Tilak Raj was also present during the programme. The programme was co-ordinated by nodal officer of FPOs, Dr.Vinod Gupta of SKUAST-J. The programme was assisted by Manohar Lal concluded by Dr.Banarsi Lal with the formal vote of thanks.
