Defeating Terror
2/9/2023 12:16:27 AM

Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) recently informed the Parliament that the government is considering providing special training to Village Defence Guards across Jammu and Kashmir.
The move would equip the VDGs to thwart the terror attacks more effectively and would ensure that terrorists think a hundred times before attacking the civilians.
According to the figures provided by the MHA, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has trained 948 Village Defence Guard in collaboration with Police in Rajouri district.
The VDGs were activated soon after the terrorists killed seven persons, including two minors, in Dhangri village on January 1 this year.
After the terror attack a massive exercise was undertaken to equip the people with arms in the villages close to the Line of Control (LoC). The ex-servicemen were provided with the sophisticated arms while the other VDG members were imparted training by the CRPF and Police.
By providing arms training to villagers the government has sent a clear message to the terrorists and their handlers that if they plan any misadventure in future they would face a tough resistance from the people as they have been equipped to help themselves.
Reactivation of VDGs in the frontier districts of Jammu region has instilled confidence among the people that if the need arises they can defend themselves. Earlier VDGs were known as Village Defence Committees (VDCs) and they had played a vital role in combating terrorism in the nineties. The VDCs were disbanded due to political reasons nearly two decades after their formation.
Now, the VDGs are back and this time around moiré strongly. Earlier VDC members were provided .3 bore rifles, now the VDG members have been given automatic assault rifles.
The gruesome cold blooded murder of civilians in Dhangri village had triggered grief, sorrow and outrage across J&K. People from all sections of the society condemned the act and are demanding that the terrorists should be brought to book for killing innocents. Providing training to more than 900 citizens is just a beginning. Many people, including women have come forward to join the VDGs so that a befitting reply could be given to terrorists and their masters. Every citizen wants to join the war against terror so that terrorism can be defeated once for all.
