7 ultras, 2 soldiers killed in first encounters of 2009

Jammu, Jan 2: In first encounter of the year 2009, at least seven militants and two soldiers are reported to have been killed in Poonch and Kashmir.
Four militants and two soldiers were killed in a fierce gun battle between militants and Rashtriya Rifles in Poonch district of Jammu region, official sources said.
They said that the encounter that started on first day of the New Year at Bathidar, Mendhar in Poonch district, concluded Friday with as many as five militants and two soldiers killed.
Sources said that a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) including two army soldiers killed in an ongoing encounter with militants, however, the body of the JCO is yet to be recovered.
Senior army officials said that Police and 39 Rashtria Rifles laid siege around Bathidar area some six days ago but the contact was established only yesterday.
They said that the militants fired upon by the joint team of police and troops which was retaliated by them, triggering off an encounter that continued until Friday evening.
Four militants and two soldiers identified as Subedar Rakesh Kumar and Naik A P Singh of army were killed in the gunfight.
Meanwhile, two militants of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) were killed in the first encounter of 2009 in the Kashmir valley, official sources said today.
They said a search operation was launched by 22 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), 179 battalion CRPF and state police at village Batengoo, Sopore, about 55 km from Srinagar in north Kashmir following a tip off about the presence of militants there yesterday afternoon.
However, when the particular area of Bhat Mohalla was being sealed, militants opened fire, the sources added.
The fire was returned after all the nearby residents were taken to safer place. During the encounter, two militants of HuM were killed. One of the slain militants was identified as Bilal Ahmad Malla, the sources said.
Two AK rifles (one damaged), six magazines (two damaged) and 105 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the slain militants.
