Keep juveniles away from wheels | | | In the recent past courts have been acting tough against the parents of the juveniles found involved in road accidents. There have been many instances where the courts have sent a father of a minor to jail for allowing his underage son to drive the vehicle. The underage driving is emerging as a major concern on roads. It poses a threat to motorists and pedestrians on the streets. Parents need to understand that by letting the minors drive they are putting their lives as well as the lives of others in jeopardy. According to the Section 199A Motor Vehicle Act 1988, when the offence under the Act is committed by a juvenile, the guardian of such juvenile or the owner of the motor vehicle shall be deemed to be guilty and shall be liable to be proceeded against and punished accordingly. So the law is clear on the issue that if a minor is involved in an accident, his guardian is liable. It has been observed that adolescent children and boys indulge in bike racing and rash driving to impress others. They derive some kind of pleasure by violating the law and it is that feeling that prompts an underage driver to not wear helmets and seat belts. Most of them don’t follow traffic rules, a self destructive factor which also poses danger to other road users. If accidents caused by minors have to be prevented then the charity has to begin from home. Parents and elders have to realize that they cannot handover the keys of a two or four wheeler to a minor till he becomes an adult. They need to understand that by giving minors the permission to drive they are not doing any great job. Awareness needs to be created about threats that juveniles could pose on the roads by indulging in rash and negligent driving. The children have to be kept away from driving seats till they attain majority and get a driving license. Teachers also have an important role to play. They have to make the students understand that stunts on roads could prove dangerous and can cut short their lives as well as the lives of others. |
