| SBI opens 1111th branch | | | Agencies Guwahati, Jan 3- Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram today inaugurated State Bank of India's landmark 11,111th branch at Sonapur, Guwahati. Tarun Gogoi Chief Minister of Assam and Akon Bora, Minister for Social Welfare, Assam, besides O.P. Bhatt, Chairman, State Bank of India were also present on the occasion. It was only in March last year that SBI opened its 10,000th branch. With the opening of the 11,111th branch at Sonapur, the Bank now has a network of 230 branches in Assam and 478 branches in the entire North East. Over 84% of the branches in the North East region are in the rural and semi-urban centres. Additional 60 branches are expected to be added to the tally, majority of which will also be located in the rural and semi urban areas. To make financial inclusion a reality, SBI has opened around 2, 50, 000 no-frills accounts so far. The Bank has also sponsored five Regional Rural Banks with a network of 175 branches. SBI, which was recently awarded the best Bank by The Banker magazine, London, is also the only Indian bank to find a place in the "Fortune Global 500" list at 380th position. It has been in the forefront of the country's economic development, especially in the far-flung and inaccessible areas. The Bank has rededicated itself to the people of the nation through its pan-India presence.
