Congress in doldrums again
2/16/2023 10:37:58 PM

The Congress Party in Jammu and Kashmir is again in news for the wrong reasons. This time the leaders have not been able to build consensus over who will represent J&K in the national convention of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) at Raipur-capital city of the Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh.
According to the media reports the Congress leaders in J&K are unable to decide whom to send.
Confusion in J&K Congress is nothing new. Infighting and factionalism have been hallmarks of the party, especially in Jammu and Kashmir. If the party leaders fail to resolve their differences, the Congress can find it very difficult to make a comeback in the assembly elections whenever these are held in the Union Territory.
Most of the rebels, who had left the Congress Party, and joined Ghulam Nabi Azad led Democratic Azad Progressive Party have returned to the party fold. But the groupism within the party continues to prevail.
The party which shared power for 12 consecutive years in Jammu and Kashmir after losing the power in 2014 has been in disarray since then. Many of its leaders have changed their loyalties and the ones who have been with the party have not been able to make their presence felt. The Congress has failed to play a role of effective opposition in Jammu and Kashmir.
Senior Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi, by holding Bharat Jodo Yatra tried to unite the Congress leaders from South to North. In J&K his yatra succeeded in bringing the rebels back but it seems that his yatra was not able to end the infighting within the J&K Congress Party.
The Congress leaders in Jammu and Kashmir need to sit back and think that if they don’t end their infightings it can have far reaching consequences for the “Grand Old Party.” As it is, the party has been struggling to remain relevant in Jammu and Kashmir. The small regional parties have filled in the void created due to party leaders not raising the issues of people and going into oblivion.
Building consensus on who will attend the party’s national convention in Raipur is not a big issue but for the leaders in J&K it has also become a difficult task.
