| Mendhar encounter rages on | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 3-A Special Police Officer (SPO) of Jammu and Kashmir police was killed in a fierce gun battle between heavily armed group of suspected Jaish-e-Mohammad militants and security forces in Mendhar area on Saturday. The gunfight which started on the night of December 31 was still going on in Bhattidhar forest belt of Chatral in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district till last reports came in. According to police, "one SPO of state police was killed on Saturday during a joint operation carried out by the security forces including special operations group of J&K police. According to reports the militants have carved out hideouts in dense forest belt of Bhattidhar in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district and were still engaging security forces in heavy gunfight. Till now three security men, two belonging to the Indian army, one SPO of J&K police and four militants were believed to have been killed in the raging gunfight in the area so far. Defence spokesman had earlier claimed on Friday that four suspected militants of JeM militant outfit were killed by Indian troopers while one of the Indian army jawan also lost his life in the gunfight. The divisional commander of JeM Abu Dawood is suspected to be involved in the encounter. He said the search operations were going on in the area as there were reports of still more militants hiding in the area.
