| Braile's bicentenary celebrated | | ‘Monthly Pension of handicapped persons enhanced’ | | Early Times Reporter Jammu, January 04 - School for blinds at Roop Nagar, Jammu today celebrated the 200th birth anniversary of Louise Braille, the Messiah of the blinds as affectionately called by the visually impaired, at a grand function organised by Social Welfare Department. Principal Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Mr. R.K. Jeerth was the Chief Guest on the occasion. A large number of prominent citizens, parents of school inmates, visually impaired persons and locals attended the function. Director, Social Welfare, Jammu Mr. L.R. Chadgal, Deputy Directors Social Welfare, Department, Mrs. Neeta Gupta and Mrs Vaneeta Sethi, District Social Welfare Officer, Jammu, Mr. Satish Sharma and Programme Officer, ICDS, Jammu besides, other officers and officials were also present on the occasion. Paying rich tributes to late Braille, Mr. Jeerth said that all of us ought to have a sympathetic approach towards the handicapped especially those visually challenged. He said that various centrally and state sponsored schemes are under implementation for the welfare of the physically challenged, old aged, widows and other destitutes in the State. Mr. Jeerth said that the monthly pension of physically handicapped persons in the State has been enhanced from Rs. 300/- to Rs. 400/- from January 1, 2009 by the Government. The daily expenditure for dietary of each blind inmate has also been enhanced from Rs. 25/- to Rs.50/- , Mr. Jeerth said and added that upgradation work of blind school at Roop Nager would be taken up in February, 2009. He said that for the purpose the Central Government has sanctioned Rs. 60 lakh and so far Rs. 30 lakh have been released. Referring to the demand for upgrading of the school from primary to high school level, Principal Secretary said that the matter would be taken up with the Education Department. Director Social Welfare, Jammu and District Social Welfare Officer, Jammu also spoke on the occasion and paid homage to the inventor of Brialle system of learning for the blind. On the occasion, the school children and some reputed blind artists sung the national song besides presented cultural programmes in Dogri, Kashmiri, Punjabi and Urdu languages, which mesmerized the audience Floral tributes were paid at the portrait of late Louise Brialle on the occasion.
