Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 6: After formally launching his son Saddam Nabi Azad in politics, the former Chief Minister and ex-Congress stalwart is looking for a safer seat to allow him to join the electoral battlefield.
Although no formal announcement has been made regarding the maiden assembly elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Ghulam Nabi Azad has started the exercise for the safer electoral battle for his son Sajjad Nabi Azad, who formally joined politics last week.
Although Sajjad Nabi Azad had campaigned with his father in the 2014 Lok Sabha election when Azad was a Congress candidate from the Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seat, he was not active in politics.
Sources said that before announcing any specific constituency for his son, Ghulam Nabi Azad has asked Sajjad Azad to visit different parts of Jammu and Kashmir and interact with common masses to get feedback from the ground situation.
On February 27, Saddam (41) was spotted at the party’s youth convention held at Nigeen Club, along with his father and other senior party leaders.
Although he was present on stage with the party leaders, Saddam did not give a speech at the convention. This marked his initial public appearance in the Kashmir valley.
Saddam, who is a businessman, is the elder of the two siblings. He has received education in England, while his sister, Sofiya Nabi Azad, has pursued journalism studies.
The Democratic Progressive Azad Party on welcomed Saddam Nabi Azad for actively joining the politics at Srinagar last week. Saddam, the son of former Chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and DPAP Chairman formerly joined politics during Youth interaction programme held at Srinagar.
“We welcome Saddam Nabi Azad for deciding to join in active politics. Given his exposure and vision, he will be a guiding force for our youth. “We are welcoming him and looking forward for his contribution,” said RS Chib, general secretary of DPAP.
“Saddam was already working behind the scenes to improve the functioning of our party. But now he decided formally to join and engage in active politics. He has a vision, mission, and energy to share with his people in Jammu and Kashmir,” said Salman Nizami, the DPAP chief spokesman.
