| MLAs await their turn | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 7: Two days after administration of oath to Omar Abdullah’s Council of Ministers, the newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly are eagerly waiting for their swearing in. Meanwhile, the new Ministers are also awaiting charge of their assignments even as the suspense is hovering over the designation of the Deputy Chief Minister as the new government is neither declaring nor denying the number two in the cabinet. After declaration of results of assembly elections on December 28, the newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly are keenly looking forward for their formal oath in the House. Curiosity is high among the first time legislators and particularly those who come to the House at very young age. There are four newly elected MLAs below the age of 35. While their still no word from the Government or the Legislative Assembly Secretariat about administration of oath to new MLAs but now appears round the corner with appointment of the Pro-Tem Speaker. The Legislator Party leader of the Congress, Choudhary Mohammad Aslam was today appointed by the Governor as Pro-Tem Speaker. After a schedule is fixed by the Government, the Pro-Tem Speaker will administer oath to newly elected legislators and new Speaker of the Assembly will be elected by the legislators. Normally the eldest elected member is appointed as Pro-tem Speaker but there is, however, no set rule. The nine Ministers of the Coalition Government are also awaiting allotment of their portfolios. In past it has been seen that Ministers usually get their departments the same evening when they are sworn in but this case it has taken a little longer. Meanwhile, suspense is still prevailing over the designation of Deputy Chief Minister. The National Conference and Congress coalition government had agreed upon to appoint a Deputy Chief Minister from Congress. Senior Congress leader Tara Chand was first among the Ministers who were administered oath on Sunday and by that way he is being believed as Deputy Chief Minister. However, an official notice is yet to be issued by the government.
