| Chaman: Commission on disparities irrational | | |
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 08- Opposing the suggestion of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, for appointing a Commission to look into the complaints of regional disparities, the BJP legislators’ party leader, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta said that constitution of new commission would mean to put under the carpet the simmering discontent and continue with the wrongs being perpetrated for the past over sixty years. Addressing meetings of party activists at Bakshi Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Bhagwati Nagar and other places today, Prof. Gupta said that Congress, National Conference and others, who ruled this State, were never fair towards Jammu and Ladakh resulting in repeated agitations and Commissions. He said that in the wake of 1968 agitation, the Congress Government had appointed a Commission headed by the former Chief Justice of India, Justice Gajendergadkar, who had submitted its report as back as in 1969, but recommendations of this commission were not implemented and the Congress handed over the power to Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah, who flatly refused to implement these recommendations. This commission was followed by Justice Sikkri commission and the Singhal Committee but their recommendations were never implemented, he regretted. The BJP leader said that the areas of discrimination are very glaring and in this connection referred to assembly and parliamentary seats in both the divisions. The most intriguing and glaring injustice was done when the National Conference, by using its brute majority in 2001, had put an embargo that there would be no delimitation till 2026, he added and asked what the new commission could do when delimitation of constituencies is a matter of constitutional obligation which has been barred by making a mysterious amendment.. Gupta asked the Congress to come out clearly on this issue because in their Election Manifesto this party has clearly promised to bring a Bill. If this Bill is brought in the House, the BJP and others from Jammu would support the amendment, he added. This, he said, would be a test of the Congress sincerity about their promises he said and doubted that Congress would do so as it has become habitual to act as appendix (Punch/Tail) of the Kashmir centric parties just to fulfill their greed for power. He asked the party activists to prepare for a struggle to have justice to all the regions and every section of the society. He also assailed the Congress-NC and their likes for not granting citizenship rights to West Pakistan refugees and solution to the problems of displaced people from POK as also from other parts of the State, under communal considerations.
