Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 8-Panthers Party leadership feels there is no need for setting up a commission for examining the level of regional discrimination of Jammu because the successive Governments, especially the one headed by the National Conference, are fully aware of the issue.
Commenting on Omar Abdullah's reported statement that alliance government proposes to set up administrative commission to examine the issue of discrimination among the three regions of he state, General Secretary of Panthers Party, Harsh Dev Singh, today said the Government record was a proof to the prolonged discrimination of people of the Jammu and Ladakh regions. Let the Government compare the share people of the Jammu region in Government departments, especially the civil secretariat viz-a viz Kashmir valley, he said and added that devolution of funds between the two regions, the Government record speaks volumes about unequal distribution of funds for development.
He said if the Government was serious on ending regional discrimination it should examine the official records or carry out a detailed survey.
The reluctance on the part of successive Governments on setting up delimitation commission had been the root cause of regional discrimination, he observed and said that, if the Government, headed by Omar Abdullah, was keen to end regional discrimination, it should favour redrawing of the Assembly constituencies in Jammu region.
"By setting up a commission to examine the matter would be sheer wastage of time”, he said adding that the previous Government was committed to set up Finance Commission and it took nearly five years for it to do so.
In reply to a question he said that among various issues that need immediate resolution included unemployment and end to the raw deal being meted out to the refugees from West Pakistan settled in Jammu. He said that the National Conference has made commitment during the electioneering that it would provide job to one member of every family. He said Omar would receive bouquets if he fulfills his commitment.
The Panthers Party leader said that for the last 60 years the West Pakistan refugees have not been given the citizenship rights and all successive Governments were seen promising to undo injustice but so far no Government has done anything for these refugees.
