Senior Mufti of Deoband suspended after shown receiving money
9/17/2006 10:15:13 PM

Deoband, Uttar Pradesh, Sep 17 Maulana Margub-ur-rahman, the Rector of Darul-Uloom, Deoband, a noted Islamic Educational Institution today suspended senior Mufti Maulana Habibur Rahman Khairabadi who was shown by a private news channel taking money for issuing a Fatwa (edict).
The suspension comes into force with immediate effect, the Deputy Rector of Darul-Uloom Maulana Abdul Khalik Madrasi and Public Relations Official Adil Siddiqui told UNI here.
A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting of the institution, known world wide for its high norms of Islamic education.
The meeting also decided to institute an enquiry into the whole incident to ascertain if Maulana Khairabadi was guilty or was a victim of some conspiracy. ''If the charges against him are proved wrong, the Darul-Uloom would launch defamation proceedings against the satellite news channel,'' they said.
The suspended septuagenarian Mufti was not available for comments.
Meanwhile, the Ulemas and Muftis of Deoband have reacted sharply to the news item showing Maualana Khairabadi accepting money for issuing a fatwa. They described it as ''shameful'' and ''condemnable.'' Shekhul Hadees of Darul-Uloom (Waqf), the parallel organisation of Darul-Uloom, Deoband and national president of All India Tanzeem Ulema-e-hind Maulana Anzar Shah Kashmiri, said that such incident was never found in the history of Islam anywhere.
''This is the biggest crime and the mufti should not only be dismissed but subjected to social boycott,'' he said.
Mufti Ahsan Qasmi of Darul-Uloom (Waqf) said taking money to issue Fatwas was 'illegal' and an offence in Shariayt. He said any Mufti, at best, could take fee for writing down the Fatwa but issuing the same for monetary gains was unthinkable.
According to Mufti Maulana Islam of Darul-Uloom said a fatwa provides solution of religious problems of the Muslims in the light of the Quran and Hadees.
