| Valley pumps go dry | | | Early Times Report Srinagar: As the strike called by the truck operators enters fourth day, Kashmir Valley has started to witness shortage of petrol and other essential commodities. The strike has been coupled by the fact that executives of major oil companies in India are on a strike, hampering the oil distribution further. According to PBI, long queues could be seen on the petrol pumps in Srinagar city as most of the pumps have run out of stock. The crisis that has been created is causing lot of problems for the common man. "I have been trying to get petrol for my bike from the last two hours, but the queue seems to be a never ending one. People have been waiting here at the petrol station as there is no other alternative available for the people," Shabbir Ahmad, a young executive told PBI while waiting for his turn at a petrol pump near Khanyar in Old city. Like Shabbir there are hundreds of people who have been wasting time and efforts in order to get their vehicles filled. "I tried my luck and hopefully I managed to get three liters of petrol for my bike. I know this will not suffice for long but I can manage for the next three days," Abid, a student rushing for his tuitions, said. The nation wide truckers strike was announced on Monday last. Truck operators have been demanding a descent cut in diesel prices besides reduction in the cost of spares and toll tax. The government on his part has been saying that the demands are not genuine. Valley has been facing a shortage of essential commodities as well after the strike entered its second day. However, officials in the state claimed that everything is quit normal and people need not to worry. Even newly sworn in Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during a meeting held in Srinagar of Thursday called on the officials to ensure supply of oil and essentials in the valley. The officials according to sources have claimed that they have stored oil and other essentials in the Valley and the stock will run for almost three weeks, a claim that miserably fails on ground.
