| Several people join funeral of procession of Luchumir | | | Early Times Report Leh Jan 09- Nawang Sangey Lachumir, a retired forest officer who died at Dehradun (Uttranchal) recently was cremated today in his native village Leh. He was 80 years. The funeral procession was among others attended by the Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC Chering Dorje. Late Sangey was conferred Gold medal in 1992, Government of India’s prestigious Indira Priyadarshni Vriksha Mitra Award in 1996 and Ladakh Vriksha Mitra Award in 2001 for his meritorious and dedicated service in promoting forestation in Ladakh. He was a pioneering forester to introduce forestry in climatically very harsh conditioned Changthang region in the year 1963 and brought high altitude cold desert of Changthang under massive plantation with very high survival rate of about 80%. Some of the plantation areas are located at more then 15000 feet above sea level where the tree concept is almost ceased. His contributions in development of pasture land, promotion of medicinal plants and protection of Wild life is remarkable for human kind as well as for wild life.
