City recovers from daylong oil panic

Jammu, Jan 9: On third day of oil crisis, before it ended late this evening, it was a day of unrest and chaos in the winter capital city with people rushing from one petrol pump to other with empty cans looking for fuel.
Though the strike of oil companies was called off late this evening but it still may take a day or two get the smooth supply of fuel resumed.
On third day of oil companies strike, which also hit the J&K state badly heavy rush of vehicle owner’s was witnessed in front of the petrol pumps in the city. It is not only vehicle owner’s, but the worst suffers are LPG consumers, due to sudden shortage of fuel supply. At numbers of places house wives were seen perturbed due to non-availability of LPG, keeping prevailing winter season into consideration. Due to this LPG consumers have become panicky and as such feel sorry that the government both at centre and state level is doing nothing
Reporter of this paper who visited number of petrol pumps found long queue of vehicles in front of petrol pumps.
Rakesh Sharma a final year B.Sc. student of a local college on the spot said, due to non-availability of fuel, he missed his tuition, for the two consecutive days and same in the case with the other students. He said examination is approaching fast and one fails to understand how to go to tuition.
Auto driver at a one of the petrol pump said, with a great difficulty he was able to lift a patient of his mohalla to the government hospital and added of the condition continues, patients especially old and pregnant women will be put to great trouble, who mostly depended on 3-whellers.
A working woman, Meenakshi Arora waiting for turn said earlier she visited two pumps and found no petrol, and said as such she will not be in position to attend her duties. He said keeping the situation in view govt should made some alternative arrangement till situation get normal.
Rahul Mahajan, a business said, if strike continues by oil companies and truck owners people will be put to great trouble, as supply of essential supplies in the market will be stopped. During the last days prices of some items have risen, as such govt should take some steps.
Annan Sharma, president J&K Oil tanker association, while talking to this reporter said, keeping in view the strike, Indian oil company manage to provide two tankers each of fuel to J&K police and CRPF. He said steps are being made to provide un-interrupted supply to para-military forces. He said HPCL pumps are opened and people are getting fuel, through some pumps dried up due to non-availability of petrol. HPCL has more than 31 pumps in the state.
Sharma said, reports came that BPCL has withdrawn itself from the strike, and as such position will ease, and there will be no shortage.
It is pertinent to mention, out of 278 petrol pumps in state, 164 belongs to IOC, 88 to BPCL and 31 with HPCL.
This reporter tried to reach out to Divisional Commissioner Sudhanshu Pandey on phone to get the official reaction but could not communicate with the said official.
