| PDP embarks on expansion | | Mufti says conscious of opposition role | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 10: Without wasting much time on the other side of power fence, the Peoples Democratic Party has embarked on organizational expansion and strengthening in campaign in the region which is being seen as precursor to party’s preparation for the crucial Lok Sabha elections ahead. PDP patron and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today inducted in the party fold Showkat Javed Daing, a young political activist who recently contested assembly election from Banihal constituency and was declared runner up. 28 years old Daing polled 5254 votes in the constituency where Vikar Rasool of Congress won the election. Party sources said that around half a dozen candidates who either rebelled against their parties or other contested the recent elections as independents were all set to join the Peoples Democratic Party. Speaking on the occasion, Mufti said PDP would act as effective opposition to aggressively pursue the pro-people agenda. He, however, made it clear that agenda of the PDP is not to grab power but to establish sustainable peace in Jammu and Kashmir by fulfilling wishes and aspirations of the all sections of the society. "Although we got less seats than National Conference (NC) yet PDP secured more votes", Mr Sayeed said and observed, "NC has secured seats only from those areas where polling percentage was low." "We have enough strength to aggressively pursue our agenda of fulfilling wishes and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.", the former Chief Minister said and reaffirmed PDP's commitment to felicitate the process to establish lasting peace in this region. PDP patron said that his party would act as effective opposition in the Legislative Assembly. "The government is on test to perform as high turnout in the just concluding assembly election has increased peoples expectation in manifolds", he said. Reiterating that self-rule proposal is only workable and viable solution to solve all problems, he said besides incorporating internal and external dimension of the problem, wishes and aspirations of all sections of the Jammu and Kashmir have been included while formulating this visionary document. Emphasizing on the need of formulating a mechanism to remove disparities between regions and sub-regions, he said that the self-proposal aimed at devolution of powers at grass root level as well as maintaining special status of Jammu and Kashmir. Highlighting achievements of PDP regime in the State, Mr Sayeed said "with its three years regime the PDP has carved out a new path of peace and progress in this region". He further added that in short span of time his party has laid a strong foundation of mutual trust and confidence among all regions of the State. Listing priorities of his party, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed made it clear grabbing power was never been the only agenda of PDP. "Since its formation PDP has been working assiduously to establish peace in this region", he said and pointed out that prevailing peaceful atmosphere is result of the policies and programmes being propagated by his party. Daing, while speaking on the occasion, said that he has decided to join due to pro-people agenda of this party. Former Rajya Sabha member Trilok Singh Bajwa, general secretary, Daman Bhasin, Peerzad Masnoor, MLA, Choudary Zulifkar, MLA Darhal, Murtaza Khan, MLC, former Minister Manjit Singh, Falail Singh, secretary and other senior leaders were present on the occasion.
