Ending near weeklong of suspense, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has allocated charges of departments to his Ministerial Colleagues. Though there are only nine Ministers in the Cabinet, no Minister has been given additional charge of any department till further expansion of the cabinet as all remaining portfolios have been held by the Chief Ministers.
The minor partner in the coalition, the Congress, has retained almost all departments it held during the previous coalition with the Peoples Democratic Party. Housing and Urban Development and Tourism are two additional departments which Congress has bagged in alliance with the National Conference.
According to an official spokesman, the Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand has been given the department of Housing and Urban Development, Municipalities, Elections, Printing and Stationery.
Senior National Conference Minister Abdul Rahim Rather has been allocated the charge of Finance Department which he held several times during the National Conference regimes. Rather has to his credit presentation of nine annual budgets. He is also Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs.
Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed has got back his favourite department of School Education in addition to Public Enterprises. Peerzada, it may be recalled here, was Minister of School Education in Ghulam Nabi Azad cabinet when he was made to resign following allegations leveled against him by an independent Legislator in the assembly.
Another senior National Conference leader Ali Mohammad Sagar has been departments of Rural Development and Panchayats. This department was with Congress in the previous coalition. Sagar was a Minister for Works during the National Conference government.
Mian Altaf Ahmed of National Conference has got the departments of Forests and Environment. Forest department in previous government was with Peoples Democratic Party and it remained at center of controversy.
Congress Minister Taj Mohiuddin has been allocated the departments of Public Health Engineering, Irrigation and Flood Control. Nawang Rigzin Jora of Congress has got the departments of Tourism and Culture.
The only Cabinet Minister of National Conference from Jammu region Surjeet Singh Slathia has been given the departments of Industries and Commerce, Labour and Employment. Sham Lal Sharma of Congress has bagged the all important department of Health. He has also been given departments of Horticulture and Floriculture.
All other departments have been retained by the Chief Minister.
