4/13/2023 11:23:50 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 13: Contrary to the reports regarding the finalization of the roadmaps and Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the ambitious Jammu and Srinagar metro rail projects, the Union Government made it clear that these proposals are under various stages of appraisal, and approval.
“The proposals received from Union Territory government of Jammu & Kashmir for Metro Rail projects of Jammu and Srinagar are under various stages of appraisal and approval”, Minister of State in Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Kaushal Kishore recently told the Rajya Sabha.
Replying to a question of BJP member Ghulam Ali Khatana the Minister said as per the Metro Rail Policy, 2017 respective State Government/Union Territory (UT) is responsible for initiating metro rail projects.
“The Central Government considers financial assistance for such projects in cities or urban agglomerates, based on feasibility of the proposal and availability of resources, as and when posed by the concerned State Government/Union Territory (UT)”, he said.
When asked whether there is any proposal to extend the Metro Rail project to AIIMS Vijaypur and the district headquarters of Samba and Kathua, the Minister said that there is no such proposal to extend Metro Rail project to AIIMS Vijaypur and district headquarters of Samba and Kathua has been received from UT of the Government of Jammu and Kashmir.
The local leaders and bureaucrats are claiming that Jammu will have 23 kilometres Metro Rail with an estimated cost of Rs 4069.68 crore while Srinagar will have 25 kilometres Metro Rail with expected cost of Rs 4892.51 crore.
As per the proposal, Jammu will have 23 kilometers MetroLite from Bantalab to Bari Brahmana with 22 stations enroute while Srinagar will have 25 kilometers MetroLite in two corridors-each spanning over 12.5 kilometers. The first corridor will be from Indira Nagar to HMT junction while second corridor will be from Hazuri Bagh to Osmanabad.
Srinagar will have 24 stations-12 on each corridor.
“The MetroLite will run in Jammu for 17 hours and in Kashmir for 14 hours,” sources said, adding the MetroLite will have elevated corridors and not underground tunnels.
The MoHUA is examining the project in detail and will submit it to the Cabinet for approval shortly.
The Jammu and Kashmir administration is expecting the proposal to be cleared by the Union Cabinet anytime now.
The MetroLite projects in both Jammu and Srinagar are aimed at easing traffic congestion in the two cities of Jammu and Srinagar and outskirts in the long run, sources said, adding the Central Government has given weightage to Jammu and Kashmir over many other States and Union Territories for approval of metro train projects.
