Early Times Report

Katra, Apr 15: Known for their expertise and experience, Indian surgeons once again proved their extraordinary excellence in performing complex surgery and broke the age barrier to replace a Hip on an Octogenarian- the 85-year-old monk H.E Togdan Rinpoche who is head of Lama of Ladakh. Belonging to Tibetan Buddhist lineage Rinpoche had a fall that resulted in a fracture in his left hip region. He underwent Hip Replacement Surgery at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super Speciality Hospital Katra recently.
The high-end Hip Replacement surgery was performed on the Monk by Dr Vikas Padha, a Senior Consultant Orthopedics and Joint Replacement Surgeon at SMVD Narayana Superspecialty Hospital here.
“In view of his advanced age, he was thoroughly investigated before going for surgery. The surgery was high-risk due to the patient’s advanced age, but it was successful without any issues, and he was made to walk with support the day after the surgery. He was discharged after five days in the hospital due to his quick recovery that was also supported by our physiotherapy experts,” said Dr Padha who is known for performing high-risk orthopedic surgeries, including those in the very elderly age group of patients. He had performed a world-record Orthopedic surgery on a 119-year-old man from Jammu in 2020.
The Monk expressed his gratitude to Dr Padha and his team for taking excellent care of him. The team had full confidence to get me on foot once again without bothering about my advanced age and I feel very happy to get a normal and active life once again,” said Rinponche who had undergone knee replacement surgery of both knees in Taiwan a couple of years back. He underpinned the fact that Narayana Hospital’s treatment facilities matched the international standard of healthcare facilities.
He also expressed satisfaction over the fact that the people of Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir now have got a quality healthcare institution for treatment in the form of Narayana Super specialty Hospital Katra. At the time of discharge, the Monk made everyone very emotional by honouring and presenting Dr Vikas Padha with traditional Ladakhi Khatak. Overwhelmed with the excellent clinical outcomes, due to the expertise and experience of experts of Narayana Superspecialty Hospital, Katra, Dr JP Singh, the Clinical Director pointed out that eminent personalities like Rinpoche preferred advanced surgery and treatment at SMVD Narayana Hospital Katra speaks volumes about our excellence in the advanced procedure, treatment and care by a highly experienced team.
MM Mathavan, Facility Director, SMVD Narayana Superspecialty Hospital expressed satisfaction over the fact that people are choosing the hospital as their first choice for treatment, as the hospital has been providing best-in-class healthcare services in Northern India since its commissioning in April 2016.
“The hospital’s Department of Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement has been performing quality surgeries, including joint replacement surgeries, for the last seven years,” he concluded.
