Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 11- Paying rich tributes to former Prime Minister late Lal Bahadur Shastri, senior BJP leader and MLA, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta, observed that Shastri was a great soul and the nationalist people of the country. Jammu and Kashmir would always remain indebted for his services; he said and regretted that it was unfortunate that dynastic Congress has forgotten him, as they did not see anybody else great outside the Nehru-Gandhi family
Addressing a meeting of the party activists at Bakshi Nagar and Subash Nagar here today, Prof. Gupta recalled that on January 11, 1966 the late Prime Minister, Shastri, had died at Tashkent in mysterious circumstances where he had gone for an agreement in the wake of 1965 war with Pakistan.
Recounting the services of Shastri, the BJP leader recalled that in September 1965, Pakistan had launched a massive ‘Patton Tank’ attack in Chhamb sector and the security and unity of the country was in danger. But this great soul in a small body demonstrating his bigness launched a counter attack in Sialkote, Lahore and some other sectors and thus, practically demonstrated that any attack on Jammu and Kashmir would be taken as an attack against whole of India.
Shastri was a great visionary and he brought about practical unity of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India by having integration of this State at the level of the people, the BJP leader said and pointed out that it was under the stewardship of Shastri that for first time the branch of the Congress was established in Jammu and Kashmir by merging the then National Conference in the national party and other national parties including the Bharatiya Jan Sangh and CPI followed the suit.
Prof. Gupta also recalled that how the nomenclature of Sadar-e-Riyasat and that of Jammu Kashmir Prime Minister was changed to that of Governor and the Chief Minister and several Central laws were also extended to this State.
The BJP leader ridiculed the slogans of ‘Autonomy and Self-Rule’ and termed these as injurious to the unity and integrity of the country and said that BJP is pledged that they would not allow any reversal of the integration process. He asked the party activists to frustrate the designs of those who want to distance this State from rest of the country.
The meeting was also addressed by Corporator Raj Rani, Surinder Sharma, S. Tajinder Singh, Capt Surjeet Singh and Tajinder Kumar.
