| New CM throws hopes for bright future | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 12: As the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah completed his first week in office, he has generated strong hope and enthusiasm among the people for a bright future of the State. He has sent out enough signals that his opening spell has been both impressive and communicative. His vision of ensuring justice to all regions, providing amenities to every one, tackling unemployment and accelerating pace of development to make Jammu and Kashmir a developed and prosperous State, has come to the fore. Right from the way he handled media in his maiden press conference on his first day in office to his surprise visits of various Government institutions, Mr. Abdullah has dropped sufficient hints that he would be a Chief Minister with a difference. While it takes some time for someone as young as Mr. Abdullah to sink in the feeling of being at the helm of affairs of probably the most difficult State to govern, the Chief Minister has already shown enough maturity to demonstrate that he means business. He made a signature statement of that by attending the Chief Ministers' Conference on Internal Security at New Delhi within hours of being sworn-in as Chief Minister. His address during the meeting has been appreciated and his ideas on how the internal security of the country be strengthened have been well taken. During his first meeting with his cabinet colleagues, the Chief Minister discussed important issues of immediate concern. While addressing the Administrative Secretaries, Mr. Abdullah asked the Administration to formulate agenda for first 100 days of coalition Government to set the tone for governance for the next six years of its tenure, adding that he had not come with a baggage and merit would prevail. He said that it is a new year and a new beginning and he would like every one to work with a new page, adding that each one of us has to work hard and ensure best possible governance and delivery to match the expectations of the people of the State, which they amply demonstrated by their massive participation in the just-concluded Assembly elections. Confident and articulate, the Chief Minister has already made it clear at the press conference, held on his first day in the Secretariat, that he would like to have cooperation of every one including the opposition and the media. Mr. Abdullah said that he would seek cooperation and support of one and all in taking the State forward. This fact is also evident from the statement he made about not believing in politics of vindictiveness and revenge and asserted that his Government of Unity will deliver on all fronts. The young Chief Minister exhibited enough political maturity by visiting the residence of the former Chief Minister and PDP Patron to seek his support. He was forthright in looking forward to a vibrant opposition to ensure that his Government does no wrong when a deputation of senior BJP leaders called on him to apprise him about people's problems and felicitate on his taking over the onerous responsibilities as the Chief Minister. Earlier, on his first visit to Srinagar, the Chief Minister called upon the administration to provide all facilities to the people in the wake of torrid winter months. By calling upon the administration to pre-empt difficult weather conditions during winter, the Chief Minister's announcement of immediately setting up a Winter Secretariat where ministers will be available on rotation basis has also been appreciated. To have firsthand feel of the functioning of the important institutions and toning up governance and delivery mechanism, the Chief Minister paid surprise visits to Lal Ded Maternity Hospital in Srinagar, SMGS Hospital in Jammu, Grid Station at Gladni and Police Station, Gandhinagar. He took stock of the working of these institutions and issued instructions to the concerned authorities to improve their delivery system to match the expectations of the people. In order to establish a direct contact with the people at grass-roots level and provide teeth to micro-level governance, the Chief Minister, immediately after taking over the reins, has started meeting deputations of people from across the State. Mr. Abdullah has fully demonstrated that he is accessible to the maximum possible extent so that he could get firsthand feedback from Ground Zero which would help in better formulation and implementation of development and welfare schemes.
