Rebellion in NC
4/26/2023 11:14:13 PM

National Conference seems to be finding it hard to handle the rebellion within its party ranks.
The party leadership has sent a strong message to its leaders and cadres by expelling former legislator and rebel leader Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar from the party for six years for indulging in anti-party activities.
The grand old party of Jammu and Kashmir which ruled the erstwhile state for many years since 1947 has been on cross roads after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
NC’s slogans of autonomy and J&K having its own Prime Minister and President stand punctured. The party is trying to look for ways and means to survive as it has been pushed to the wall during the past three and a half years.
Many grass root workers of the party and the leaders have joined other political parties and it appears that there is gross indiscipline within the party ranks. National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah while addressing a gathering at Ganderbal recently minced no words to drive home a point that the indiscipline won’t be tolerated. For the time being it seems that assembly elections in J&K are unlikely but the Parliamentary, Panchayat and ULB polls are slated to be held early next year. The National Conference leadership is aware of the fact that if the party cadres and leaders keep on indulging in indiscipline it can have far reaching consequences and would directly have an impact on the election results.
The NC leadership is trying to put its house in order by reassuring the party activists that the time would change but everyone is aware that after redrawing of the assembly constituencies, political equations have changed in J&K as Jammu and Kashmir have come at par vis-à-vis distribution of assembly seats in both the regions. The National Conference faces stiff competition in Kashmir while in Jammu region it has no standing. So it won’t be easy for the party to form the government in the Union Territory. It has to perform exceptionally well in the elections to become a coalition partner. However, its cadres leaving the party and showing dissent has made things difficult for the party leadership. The NC leaders know that to keep the flock together has become a big challenge.
