Self rule offers way for lasting solution: Mufti

Early Times Report

Anantnag, Jan 12 – Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said the PDP has created a new space within the democratic system for the resolution of Kashmir issue. "Having emerged as a strong regional force, PDP shall have a crucial role to play in the new democratic discourse on Kashmir resolution," he said.
Addressing his first post-poll rally here today, Sayeed said PDP would, with fresh resolve and renewed determination, will carry forward its mission of ending the State's political and economic despair. "We will carry the voice of Jammu & Kashmir to all parts of the country and use all the forums including the Assembly, Parliament and other democratic platforms to champion the State's political, economic, security, identity and regional concerns," he said and cautioned that nothing will be allowed to push down the throat of the State against the wishes of its people.
Sayeed said the encouraging participation of the people in the recent elections has accorded fresh approval, sanctity and credibility to the democratic processes and institutions in the State. He said the new State Assembly is, perhaps, the most representative of all shades of opinion. "It represents regions, communities and sub-regions and all members have a genuine mandate except perhaps those coming from areas where, unfortunately, people chose not to vote in good numbers," he said and added the new House has not just the legal and constitutional validity but moral authority to speak on behalf of the State and its people.
"An entirely new situation, with empowered democratic and civil society institutions, has now emerged in the six-decade-old history of Kashmir issue," Sayeed said. He said most of the previous attempts at Kashmir resolution, unfortunately, had become only a bargaining counter for power. "In that process the State kept only losing the identity and powers that it had acquired after a long and painful struggle for Self-Rule," he said.
Sayeed said time has come for reconciling the State's divergent opinions in a democratic spirit to resolve its political and economic problems. "Inter and Intra-State issues and issue of equal opportunities for all regions, communities and sub-regions can be resolved if the problem is approached with an open mind and with a will to move ahead," he said and added that the PDP's Self-Rule document offers a comprehensive solution to all the three dimensions of the problem. "It not only outlines the contours of the State's political empowerment, but also lays a roadmap for its economic emancipation," he said.
The PDP Patron expressed gratitude to the people of the State in general and Anantnag in particular for extending unequivocal support to his party's agenda.
PDP legislators Abdul Rehman Veeri and Mohammad Sartaj Madni also addressed the rally.
