REASI, Apr 29: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the administrative control of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J) is educating the farmers on ecofriendly farming/organic farming and natural farming so that they can produce safe and healthy food and generate more farm income and employment. According to Dr. Banarsi Lal, Sr.Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi, the cost of agro-chemicals is increasing and it is difficult to mitigate the inputs costs for the small and marginal farmers so organic and natural farming farming are the best option to fetch more farm returns. He narrated that indiscriminate use of agro-chemicals in the crops is causing different kinds of ailments to the human beings and also deteriorating the soil health and environment so there is need to practice eco-friendly farming practices. He expressed that eco-friendly farming can be done with the minimum resources which are already available at farmers field. He said that KVK is guiding the farmers on organic inputs preparations such as Jeevamrit, Beejamrit, cow urine, Panchgavaya, fermented butter milk etc. for organic agriculture. He added that KVK is stressing on the cluster based approach for organic and natural farming. Dr.Suja Nabi Qureshi, Scientist said that organically grown crops are healthier than conventionally grown crops and are more profitable. He informed on the crops rotation and sowing of leguminous crops to increase the fertility of soil. He narrated that organic inputs such as neem cake, neem oil, pheromones traps, sticky traps, biofertilizers etc. can also be utilized in organic farming. He added that KVK is also educating the farmers on the organic fruit and vegetables production, organic honey production, organic spices production etc. so that they can increase their farm income. He said that KVK, Reasi is providing the technical support to the farmers and guiding them how to convert a chemical farm to an organic farm. Many new farmers are coming forward for eco-friendly farming after observing the results of successful organic farmers.
