| Joura asks for identifying new tourist sites | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, JANUARY 13 – The Minister for Tourism and Culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora Tuesday emphasized the need for identification of more destinations in remote and hilly areas so that these could also be brought on the tourist map of the State. Interacting for the first time here today after taking over the charge of Tourism and Culture ministry, Jora called upon the concerned authorities to come with innovative ideas and plans for sprucing up tourist destinations of the State so that a time-bound strategy would be evolved for their development. Stating that the nature had bestowed Jammu and Kashmir with abundant beauty, the Minister said the time was ripe to package tourism industry in a right manner to attract both domestic as well as foreign tourists, which will ultimately improve the economy of the State. Seeking cooperation of the officers of the tourism department in working with vigour and devotion Jora outlined a comprehensive plan to focus on development and utilization of tourist resources by maintaining pollution-free environment, conservation and preservation of green-lands, landscapes, pastures, lakes, rivers, forests, as well as promoting pilgrim-tourism in the State. He also asked the authorities to dovetail cultural heritage with pilgrim tourism so that more visitors are attracted towards the State. He urged for proper look after of pilgrimage and cultural heritage tourist places and called upon the concerned authorities to ensure renovation needed at these sites. Making specific reference towards State’s potential in adventure tourism, the minister said that it will be given special attention and Adventure Tourism Melas would be organized in the mountainous areas of the State. Secretary, Tourism, Nayeem Akhtar gave a detailed power-point presentation in the meeting on the physical and financial achievements registered under the sector. He informed that at present under the Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Programme, the development work on 12 Tourism Development Authorities at a cost of Rs 240 crore are apace in various areas of the State. He also stated that under the Circuit Development Programme, three Tourist Circuits, which include Jammu-Lakhanpur-Basohli-Bani-Sarthal Circuit, Bhadarwah-Kishtwar-Simthan-Srinagar and Jammu-Rajouri Circuits, was also under execution. Besides, development works on seven more Tourist Development Authorities under State sector are in progress in the State, he added. He also briefed the Minister about various tourist resorts and their development in Ladakh region. Among others, Managing Director, JK TDC Mr. Rafiq Qadri, Director, Tourism, Kashmir Mr. Farooq Ahmad Shah, Director Tourism, Jammu Mrs. Sarita Chauhan and other senior officers of the department also attended the meeting.
