Promise of changing SKUAST-J nomenclature awaits implementation
5/3/2023 10:50:11 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, May 3: After the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of J&K into two Union Territories (UTs), it was promised that the nomenclature of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Science and Technology (SKUAST) Jammu should be changed as this demand was raised by as teaching and non-teaching staff.
For the last so many years people have been agitating to change the name of SKUAST-J to Agriculture University of Jammu but nothing has been done so far,.
In January 2020, a delegation of the teachers of the SKUAST-J met the then Union Minister of State of Agriculture, Kailash Choudhary who had assured to solve this issue.
After the bifurcation of J&K into two UTs, it is high time to get this long pending demand of the people of Jammu fulfilled because there is reason to continue same name of two universities.
Name of two varsities in the same UT namely SKUAST - Jammu and SKUAST –Kashmir is creating a lot of controversy and confusions among the masses.
People have been demanding that the SKUAST-Jammu should be rechristened as Jammu Agriculture University.
SKUAST- Jammu has ample staff and resources, efficient faculty members, KVKs, and research stations in all districts of Jammu province to cater the needs of farmers in far flung areas that have suffered political as well as developmental alienation since independence.
The farmers of these areas are getting the benefit of latest advances in agricultural technologies from farm university of Jammu division, thus, resulting in higher agricultural production.
There is a strong resentment among the farming community, civil society and intellectual of Jammu region regarding the nomenclature of the agricultural varsity. People have the opinion that their identity is suppressed by prefixing the name Sher-e-Kashmir before the Agricultural University of Jammu. The rechristening of SKUAST-J as Jammu Agricultural University is very essential for its separate identity at UT and national level.
Important to mention here that most of the State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) in India are established in the name of the State like Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) – Ludhiana, Haryana Agricultural University (HAU)- Hisar, Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (HPKV) – Palampur Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Kerala Agricultural University (KAU).
