5/6/2023 11:16:24 PM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, May 6: Security forces shot dead a local militant of Lashkar-e-Taiba in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district on Saturday, police said.
The gunfight broke out at Karhama Kunzer area Baramulla during a cordon and a search operation which was launched by police, Army and CRPF following an input about militant presence.
"During the search operation, as the joint search party approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding terrorist fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated effectively leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, a local terrorist linked with proscribed terrorist outfit LeT was killed," a police spokesman said.
The slain was identified as Abid Wani a resident of Yarhol Babapora Kulgam in south Kashmir.
"Incriminating materials, arms & ammunition including an AK-47 rifle was recovered from the site of the encounter," he added.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Baramulla Amod Nagpure said the slain was planning to carry out a "major strike" in the area.
The village is located close to the highway that leads to the tourist resort of Gulmarg .
SSP Nagpure said they have been able to neutralize the threat.
"..Our network is very strong and we have been getting prompt information regarding suspicious movements and due to the synergy among all forces, we have been able to neutralize every threat," he told reporters near the encounter site.
The SSP Baramulla said that in view of the upcoming G20 meeting, security forces have intensified operations to ensure the peaceful conduct of the event.
" We are sure that the G20 meeting will be peaceful and successful," he said.
The G20 delegates are also likely to visit the ski resort of Gulmarg.
Three LeT militants have been killed in the past 48 hours in Baramulla district in two separate operations.
Yesterday morning, five Army personnel including members of elite Para commandoes were killed after militants triggered an explosive device following an encounter with security forces in the forests of Jammu region Rajouri district.
