Pvt schools need to fall in line
5/7/2023 10:42:44 PM

The Jammu and Kashmir School Education Department (J&KSED) has tightened noose around the private schools in the Union Territory by directing them to follow the instructions of the Fee Fixation Committee (FFC).
In the recent past the J&KSED has acted against a few schools that have violated the norms and are not following the directions of the FFC. It has also issued circulars asking the private institutions to fall in line or be ready to face disciplinary action.
The J&KSED has taken a strong note about the private schools issuing diktats to parents and forcing them to buy uniforms, books and other items from selected stores. Parents have been alleging the tuition and transportation fee have been hiked arbitrarily. In a nutshell there are a bundle of complaints that have been lodged against the private schools.
In many cases parents have alleged that the private schools don’t follow directions of the FCC or the J&K SED and act according to their whims and fancies.
The government has taken a few steps to make these institutions understand that they are not running business houses. Their duty is to impart education and it’s different from other businesses which are only about making profit.
After abrogation of Article 370 central laws have become directly applicable in Jammu and Kashmir. Among these laws, the Right to Education (RTE) Act has also become enforceable in the Union Territory.
The Right of children to free and compulsory education act or Right to Education Act (RTE) describes the modalities of the importance of free and compulsory education for children between 6 and 14 in India under Article 21 (A) of the Indian Constitution. The Act makes education a fundamental right of every child and requires all private schools to reserve 25% of seats to children (to be reimbursed by the state as part of the public-private partnership plan). The J&KSED needs to ensure that the private schools reserve the seats for the children from Economically Weaker Sections of the society. Besides, a mechanism needs to be worked out to ensure to keep the tuition fee and other charges in check. Books of all the schools need to be made available in the open market so that the parents aren’t compelled to buy these from selected shops.
People need to support the initiatives which the government is taking to streamline the education sector, especially the private schools.
