Jammu, May 8: Justice Atul Sreedharan, Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court who has been transferred to High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh will take oath on May 10, 2023 at 9:30 AM at Srinagar.
It is worthwhile to mention here that on April 27, 2023 the notification issued by Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, in exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, has transferred Justice Atul Sreedharan, Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, as a Judge of High Court of J&K and Ladakh with the direction to assume charge of his office in J&K and Ladakh High Court.
Last month, the Supreme Court Collegium accepted Justice Sreedharan’s request to transfer him out of the State as his daughter, a law student, will start practising in the district courts and before the Indore Bench of the High Court starting next year. The five-member Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud in a resolution dated March 28 said that in a communication dated January 23, 2023, Justice Atul Sreedharan, who was appointed as a Judge of the MP High Court on April 7, 2016, had “sought a transfer out of the State of Madhya Pradesh on the ground that his elder daughter would enter practice next year and would be appearing before the District Court and the Indore Bench of the High Court”.
With the transfer of Justice Sreedharan, the strength of J&K and Ladakh High Court has risen to 16. At present there are 15 Judges including Chief Justice. Born on May 24, 1966, Justice Atul Sreedharan joined the chamber of Gopal Subramanium, Senior Advocate in 1992 at Delhi and remained associated with him till 1997. During this period, he assisted Subramanium in several civil and criminal matters before the Supreme Court of India, High Court of Delhi and the Trial Court at Delhi. From 1997 to December 2000, Justice Atul practiced independently at Delhi and then shifted to Indore in the year 2001. He was also closely associated with Satyendra Kumar Vyas, Senior Advocate at Indore and independently handled criminal and a few civil cases before the Trial Court and High Court, service matters and writ petitions before the High Court and also cases of medical negligence before the Consumer Forums.
He remained on the panel of the Madhya Pradesh Housing Board and represented the State of Madhya Pradesh as Panel Advocate before the High Court of Madhya Pradesh, Bench at Indore from 2001 to 2003. He also represented the State of Madhya Pradesh as a Government Advocate before the High Court of Madhya Pradesh, Bench at Indore and remained on the panel of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan from the year 2004 till July 2012.
He was appointed as Central Government Counsel on 19/09/05 to appear in cases on behalf of the Union of India till 19/09/08. He was appointed as Central Government Counsel (Senior Panel) on 19/02 /10 to appear in cases on behalf of the Union of India till 19/02/13.
He was appointed as Judge of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh on April 7, 2016 and Permanent Judge on March 17, 2018 (JNF)
