Dangal at SMC: Mayor, Deputy, others lock horns, Seek Raj Bhawan intervention
5/11/2023 11:05:11 PM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, May 11: With the Srinagar Smart City notifying new parking rates in the summer capital here, a war of words has erupted in the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) with the elected representatives washing the dirty linen in public.
Even the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor have locked horns with each other while the concerned have sought intervention of the Raj Bhawan.
“SMC has neither been consulted nor has it authorized these parking rates — which I believe has exclusive statutory mandate for public places. A parking policy/by-laws for Srinagar would deal with this. Arbitrary, isolated notification of parking rates is a contradictory exercise,” the SMC Mayor Junaid
Mattoo said on his social media handle.
The Deputy Mayor was quick to respond sharply. “After a very long time; someone is being reminded of Laws & implementing the same! It’s the same person who ruthlessly violated; transgressed & infringed them. He has made all #SMC committees dysfunctional; how come is he talking about Rules & Regulations today. It truly doesn’t suit him; he has created all the troubles for people and now is trying to come out clean,” Deputy Mayor Parvaiz Qadri responded seeking intervention of the Raj Bhawan.
SMC Councilor Danish Bhat who also heads the councilors front took dig at the Mayor. “I’m amazed at his level of audacity to question others when he himself abused powers as Srinagar’s Mayor to take the whole city hostage for his petty interests. He has murdered the democratic values of an institution by impeding the democratic processes.”
“For the last 3 years, we don’t have a single standing committee that is functional, and for more than a year we haven’t had a single session of the Corporation when at least 1 session per month is mandatory by the same act he is referring to in his tweet. His failure as the Mayor of the City can be transcribed into a complete book… He is making the entire City suffer for his petty ego and interests,” Bhat said seeking personal intervention of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
A senior official said ongoing infighting among the elected representatives has only worsened.
