MMJHS reviews Mubarak Mandi restoration work

JAMMU, JANUARY 14: Age old Royal Dogra Heritage Complex Mubarak Mandi, Jammu, the remanant of rich historical background in Jammu, is being conserved and developed in its original architectural form as a self sustaining tourist destination and socio cultural heritage centre.
This was revealed at a high level meeting held in this regard here today under the chairmanship of Chairman of Mubarak Mandi Jammu Heritage Society (MMJHS) Mr. Gulchain Singh Charak.
During the meeting, the Chairman and Members of MMJHS discussed various issues including progress of the works of PWD, tackling of monkey menace, cleaning/restoration of toshakhana items, curative conservation of murals, budget proposal of 2009-10 and revised estimates 2008-09 support by the state government, stationing of fire and emergency services, establishment of sub-division (civil), providing of road link to adjoining areas from outside the High Court Complex, demarcation of boundaries of the complex and preparation/declaration of heritage zone of Jammu city master plan.
It was disclosed during the discussions that the project would be finished in a phased manner with the support of Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture. After the completion of its first phase that part of the monument would be opened for public. Charak apprised that the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) has started the restoration and conservation work of Army headquarters and Foreign Office building, the status of the progress achieved during the past four months. He informed that the work of Darbar Hall is under progress. Documentation and estimates for restoration of the buildings from High Court Complex to Main Deodi is proposed to be entrusted to ASI as the same is to be used as services corridor for Darbar Hall and High Court in refuse plan. He said that reports for the conservation alongwith estimates received from INTACH as well as ASI needs to be re-examined by the committee of experts so as to formulate the interior designs as per the refuse plan.
For shifting of Electric Sub-Stations, it was decided that electric sub-stations are shifted from the complex, the work is under progress. He said that Government of India has provided sufficient financial assistance for restoration of Mubarak Mandi Heritage Complex.
Later, the Chairman and the members of Mubarak Mandi Jammu Heritage Society also inspected the ongoing restoration work of the complex and asked the executing agency to complete the Phase-I renovation work within stipulated time frame for the benefit of general masses.
Among others who attended the meeting were Principal Secretary, Irrigation and Flood Control Mr. A. K. Angurana, Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, Dr. Mandeep K Bhandari, Director, Archives, Mr. A K Qadri besides Members of MMJHS Prof. Lalit Magotra, Maj. Gen. G. S. Jamwal, Prof. Anita Bloeria and Prof. Zahur-ud-Din.
