New parties, new leaders
5/15/2023 10:33:03 PM

Another political party is likely to come to fore in Kashmir. It seems that every politician in the Valley wants to have his own party and no one wants to be an activist or a worker.
According to a news story carried by this newspaper some young politicians from Kashmir are lobbying in New Delhi to get a clearance for floating of a new political party in the Valley.
The leaders who are trying to float a new political party in league with some “like minded faces” were affiliated with the same political party and had left it due to differences over some issues.
Whether these young leaders get a clearance to float a party or not remains to be seen but the fact is that there has been a mushroom growth of political parties in Kashmir.
Whenever assembly elections are held in J&K many parties would be pitted against each other in Kashmir and possibilities of any single party emerging as a winner look bleak.
After the abrogation of Article 370 political scenario in Kashmir has changed completely. The traditional Kashmir based parties i.e. The National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party have lost many leaders as they have chosen different paths.
The new parties which appeared after August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to scrap J&K’s special status and divided it into two Union Territories—are reaching out to the people with new promises and new hopes. Leaders of these parties are talking about development and creating employment avenues. Issues like autonomy, self-rule, J&K having its own Prime Minister and President have vanished in thin air.
The traditional parties in Kashmir have tried raking up these issues but people are not paying much attention as everyone is aware that these parties cannot get back Article 370.
New parties, new slogans and new leaders are posing a challenge to the politicians who ruled J&K after 1947. The tradition of MLAs son becoming a MLA and Chief Minister’s son or daughter becoming a Chief Minister has changed.
People have become aware about their political rights and the new leaders who are trying to float new parties will have to convince the people that they don’t carry any baggage from the past and they would become their true representatives. Otherwise floating a political party just for the sake of it doesn’t make any sense.
