| Scintillating Santoor recital by Abhay Rustum Sopori | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 14- Abhay Rustum Sopori, the youngest Santoor maestro, youngest classical musician to compose and conduct orchestras and folk ensembles and also the youngest artist from the country to be awarded the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award presented a scintillating Santoor recital before an appreciative audience at the Government College for Women, Parade Ground here today. A graduate in Management and Computers with a Masters in Music, Abhay was born in Srinagar and inherited a profound sense of music from his fabled Sufiana Gharana of Kashmir – the exclusive traditional Santoor playing family – with its roots spanning nine generations over more than 250 years. Abhay learnt music under the traditional Guru-Shishya Parampara from his grandfather Pandit Shamboo Nath Sopori, hailed as the ‘Father of Music’ in Jammu and Kashmir, and from his father, Pandit Bhajan Sopori, the legendary Santoor maestro and music composer. Abhay is also the recipient of Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar (2006). He has also been honoured with the prestigious National Dogri Award – 2008, Sangeet Bhushan Award – 2007, Excellence Award – 2007, Young India Award – 2006, Juenjo International Heritage Award – 2005 and Kalawant Samman – 2004, amongst others. With notable albums to his credits, he has participated in various prestigious music and performing art festivals across the world. In today’s performance Abhay played Raag Ahiri Todi. Abhay made the students and general public sing with him. Students enjoyed this interaction. Abhay also spoke about the need to focus on youth and explained the subtleties and nuances of the raga and instrument Santoor. Abhay presented various technicalities of his style – Sopori Baaj , created by Legendary Pt. Bhajan Sopori. He demonstrated Meend and Glides, another special feature of his Baaj. This was followed by compositions in Raag Ahir Bhairav. He presented a Bandish (vocal composition) “Sagari Raen Jagat bhaye Bhore” in Madhya Laya Ek Taal. His Bandish “Jago Re Bhai Jago” was in Drutlaya Teentaal. Ati-Drut Teentaal Gat (Instrumental composition) specially composed by Abhay with lightning tempo and speedy ‘Taan’ patterns, had an electrifying effect on the audience which was spellbound with the performance. Abhay was accompanied by Ustad Akhtar Hasan on Tabla. Prominent among the dignitaries who witnessed the programme included B.S. Bali, Vachaspati Sharma, Chander Gulhati, Sarit Das, Zunain Halim Khan, Ragini Rainu, Ravinder Misra, Principal and staff of the college including Prof. Aparna Sopori.
