NC keeps options open | | | National Conference not giving much publicity to its president Dr Farooq Abdullah attending the swearing in ceremony of Siddaramaiah as the Karnataka chief minister in Bengaluru and former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah skipping the event has once again triggered speculations that the NC doesn’t want to annoy Bharatiya Janata Party. Kashmir based parties for a longtime have been claiming that NC has kept its doors open for the BJP and wants to enter into an alliance with the party whenever assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are held. Omar Abdullah has been maintaining a distance from the opposition parties, while his father Dr Farooq Abdullah has been attending the meetings and ceremonies of the opposition parties alone. It appears that the National Conference is indecisive and is unable to make its stand clear. Father is keeping the opposition in good books while son is trying to send a message to BJP that he is not interested in the opposition unity. On the other hand, the Peoples Democratic Party has made it clear that it’s a part of the opposition. PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti attended Siddaramaiah’s swearing in ceremony and gave it wide publicity. She was vocal about senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha, while NC issued just a formal statement. The National Conference leaders, especially Omar Abdullah, appears to have realized that siding with the opposition won’t help his party’s cause in Jammu and Kashmir and he is trying to strike a balance. After August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and divided it into two Union Territories— J&K’s political scenario changed completely. Kashmir based parties that used to call shots for 70-years have lost their footing and the redrawing of the assembly constituencies have brought Jammu and Kashmir regions at par with each other vis-à-vis distribution of the assembly seats. Omar Abdullah is aware that no Kashmir based party can become a part of the government without the blessings of the Centre and it appears that PM Modi would return to power for the third consecutive term in 2024. Junior Abdullah is keeping all the options open and seems to be in no mood to annoy the Centre. |
