| On R-Day, Kashmir train to move on Rajpath | | | ET DESK Jammu, Jan 16 : The Railways will this year showcase their first train service in Kashmir valley that was flagged off by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in October last year, in their tableau during the Republic Day Parade, at Rajpath in New Delhi. Kashmir valley got its first train service only last year, over 160 years after India's first railway line from Mumbai to Thane was inaugurated. This historic train, which fulfils the long cherished dream of the Valley dwellers, covers a distance of 66 kilometres and runs twice in a day from either side and the journey takes one hour and 35 minutes. It passes through nine stations in its entire journey. The stations are at Budgam, Srinagar, Pampore, Kakapora, Awantipora, Panjgam, Bijbehara, Rajwansher and Anantnag. The prestigious project was launched in the year 1998. The 1400 HP diesel EMU engine has been provided with heating system for quick and trouble free start in winters. 'Snow cutting type cattle guard' is provided at the driving end of the diesel power car for clearing snow from tracks during winter. The passenger carrying capacity of each coach is 90. The passenger area has an arrangement of heating for comfort through roof mounted heating units. Wide unbreakable splinter proof windows for panoramic view and Sliding doors at the doorways have also been provided. Distinctive and attractive colour scheme has been adopted for the coaches. Railways are in the process of linking the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country by a rail link between Jammu and Baramulla. ''The mesmerising beauty and panoramic view of the Valley and the mountains will captivate the hearts of millions and lead to boost in domestic as well as international tourism and additional employment opportunity in the State,'' said a railway spokesman. Construction of Jammu-Udhampur-Katra-Quazigund-Srinagar-Baramulla new rail link is the biggest project undertaken by the Railways in the mountainous terrain since Independence and has been declared a national project. The proposed tableau will present a perfect thematic depiction of this beautiful railway system, a reflection of snow-clad Srinagar Railway Station and a tunnel. Indian Railways, the prime transport organisation of the country carries 17 million passengers and two million tonnes of freight every day to the nook and corner of this vast sub-continent.
