Know your rights to fight crime
7/11/2006 10:37:20 PM
Jammu, July 11 : To make people aware of their rights, Jammu based Non-governmental organization today begun holding public meetings to educate people on the legal options for fighting crime.

In a statement issued here today, Rameshwar Singh Jamwal, President, Criminologist Society of Jammu and Kashmir said that people of the state are not of their legal rights and stressed upon them to seek legal help from his organization.

The Criminologist Society of Jammu and Kashmir is also teaching people about the legal options for fighting crime and the punishment they could face if they are themselves involved.

"Under this programme we are guiding the youngsters and the students about different legal provisions," said R S Jamwal.

"We are telling them that if they give porn CDs to somebody or sell them and communicate SMS and MMS to somebody, then they can be imprisoned for ten years for that," he added. The NGO has roped in religious leaders in the hope that they will have more influence over people.

"The need is to pass on the understanding to all the people. We need to tell people to stay away from crimes and we also need to tell those children who take drugs that it's a bad thing to do," said Naresh, a Hindu priest.

The criminologists are also visiting schools. A survey conducted by the NGO has shown that more than 75 per cent of criminals in the state are between 15 and 40 years old.

"These programmes should be held in all the schools so that we children also get a better knowledge and better understanding of the things and we can learn more and save ourselves from all the bad things," said Sikta, a student.

For sometime now, Jammu And Kashmir State has been in the news for all the wrong reasons and such interactions give the youth a chance to know more about crimes and to know more about their fundamental rights.
