| Dy CM for fine tuning urban planning | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, JANUARY 17 – The Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Tara Chand has stressed the need for better urban governance and planning development of the cities and towns. He was speaking at the valedictory function of a 5-day Orientation and Training Programme on Urban Management for officers of Urban Local Bodies at Institute of Management, Public Administration (IMPA) and Rural Development, here today. Director General, IMPA, Mr. Pramod Jain, Commissioner Secretary, Urban Development, Mrs. Naseema Lanker, besides other sectoral officers were present on the occasion.
The officers of the department were trained by experts from various faculties under the overall supervision of Course Director, Dr. Rachna Dutt.
The Deputy Chief Minister, who also holds the portfolio of Housing and Urban Development Department, said that in view of the rising urban population, the department has to fine tune its policies to properly manage the cities." Our cities are bursting at its seams. We require micro-level planning to manage our cities better", said Mr. Tara Chand, adding that the capacity building of departments at different levels will be enhanced to derive desired results.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that the concerned officers of the department have been advised to make special interventions at various pressure points in the ongoing projects so that they are completed on time.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that orientation of departmental officers in urban management is the need of the hour so that they are made aware about the new techniques and technology in vogue currently. Praising the IMPA for organizing such programmes, Mr. Tara Chand said that effects of such training should be felt on ground. "Training is a vital component of growth and our officers need to participate in such programmes so that they keep themselves abreast about the new development and technological innovations", the Deputy Chief Minister said.
Speaking on the occasion, DG IMPA stressed on in-service training programmes for further honing the skills of officers. He said that IMPA is focusing on need-based training programmes so that our officers are properly trained and are able to show results”.
Mrs. Lanker, while speaking at the function, said that J&K was on top of the heap with 25 per cent urban population growth, over and above the national average. She said “our urban centres are hard pressed and the department is framing a comprehensive strategy to address the same”.
Later, the Deputy Chief Minister distributed certificates among the participating officers.
