| 3 sisters among 13 killed in mishap near Thathri | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 17: In first major road accident of the year, at least thirteen passengers, including two Special Police Officers, three sisters and three infants, were killed and fifteen others were injured, five of them critically this afternoon when a passenger bus skidded off the road on Thatri-Gandoh road in Doda district. Governor NN Vohra and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Ministers and a large section of people from the civil society have expressed their anguish over the incident. Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand oversaw rescue and relief operations. He flew in to Doda to personally monitor rescue and relief measures at the mischief site-11 km short of Gandoh on Kahra-Thathri road in Doda district where a minibus bearing registration number JK02-T 9503 met with an accident. Tara Chand ordered airlifting of critically injured to the Jammu Medical College Hospital. The authorities on the direction of Deputy Chief Minister airlifted five seriously injured persons to the Jammu hospital while others have been referred to government health centre Thathri for urgent medicare. The Deputy Chief Minister announced a relief of Rs. 25ooo in favour of next to kin of deceased and Rs. 5000 to each injured. The injured were provided the cash assistance on the spot. Tara Chand directed the health and medical education authorities and district administration to provide free medicare to the injured and required assistance to the bereaved families. Reports said a Mini-Bus (9703/JK02P) on its way from Thathri to Gandoh skidded off the road at fell into a deep gorge at Jaba Telkli Passa Kehra resulting into death of thirteen persons and injuries to fifteen others. The critically injured passengers were airlifted to Jammu medical college. Police sources said that the decease passengers include three infants among which identification of a two year old child was yet to be ascertained. It was reliably learnt that the mini-bus was on its way to Gandoh from Thathri and was carrying with 28 passengers when it rolled down into a 500 feet deep gorge near Karra. Sources quoting eye witnesses told News Agency of Kashmir that the driver lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a sharp turn Police and locals swung into action and launched a massive search operation, sources said adding, that around nine persons died on the spot, while others breathed their last in the hospital. Police identified the deceased as Ashok Kumar (SPO) son of Sorab Singh resident of Joura Thathri, Parvez Ahmed (SPO) son of Showkat Ali, resident of Kota Thathri, Kashmir Singh son of Mohan Lal resident of Nagni –Thathri, Mohd Rafiq son of Mohd Subhan Bhat resident of Kenda-Thathri, Shah Ali son of Assadullah Bhat resident of Gugura Thathri, Ghulam Nabi son of Abdul Gani Malik resident of Mallano –Thathri, Tahira son of Kotli Bhaderwah. Shaheena Begum resident of Kotli Bhaderwah, Sara Begum r/o Chamba Bhaderwah, Zareena (1 years) d/o Mohd Ismail resident of Dehrot –Karah Gandoh, Bader Din son of Manzoor Ahmed resident of Tanta Thathri. The critically injured passangers, who were airlifted to Jammu have been identified as Bachan Singh son of Om Raj resident of Joura Thathri, Somina Begum w/o Gh. Nabi Malik resident of Malanoo, Sankosha Shah w/o Bishember resident of Gandoh, Khair-Ud-Din son of Mohd Hanief resident of Gogara . One of these injured, identified as Ahmed son of Rehmat Ullah succumbed to his injuries in Jammu hospital. The injured who were admitted in District Hosptial Doda were identified as Munir Ahmed son of Ahmed Ullah r/o Duggi Batola, Reshma Begum w/o Manzoor Ahmed r/o Tanta, Jaffar Hussain (Driver) son of Gh. Qadir Parray r/o Batola and Mohd Ismail son of Allah Din Gujjar r/o Dharot Kahara . The Governor conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families and wished the injured speedy recovery. Expressing concern over the growing number of road accidents, particularly in the hilly areas like Doda, the Governor observed that it was the bounden duty of all the agencies concerned with traffic management to exercise ruthless check to ensure against overloading, validity of driving licenses and the fitness of the drivers, the condition of the vehicles, particularly buses and load carriers, whether there is any check against over-speeding etc to ensure against such tragic mishaps. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed profound grief and sorrow over the loss of human life in a road accident in Doda today. Abdullah, who is out of town, was shocked to hear about the accident and asked the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Tara Chand, Minister for Forest, Mian Altaf Ahmad and Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Mr. Sudhanshu Pandey to immediately fly to the site of accident and oversee the relief and rescue measures. The Chief Minister condoled the death of the accident victims and asked the Administration to provide best possible medical care to the injured shifted to the hospital. He also conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families.
