6/1/2023 10:56:02 PM
Early Times Report

Samba, June 1: Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Sharma of Samba launched the ‘Create Block Print Patterns’ contest on the jk.mygov.in portal. The contest aims to revive the traditional designs used for calico printing in Samba.
Participants can access the contest on the web portal by logging in to www.jk.mygov.in and following the active competition link. The DC highlighted the significance of this initiative in celebrating and reviving the indigenous craft of the district. The contest encourages all residents of J&K, particularly students and artists, to participate and promote the unique cultural heritage and local flora and fauna, with a focus on District Samba. The main objective is to provide a comprehensive collection of prints with historical and cultural importance for the local artisans practicing calico printing. The designs selected from the contest will be used by the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom Jammu for creating wooden blocks for block printing. Ms. Niharika, AD Handicrafts Samba, provided insights into the art of calico printing. Samba, known as the ‘Sheeton Ka Shehar’ (City of Sheets), has a rich tradition of calico printing on handwoven cotton sheets using wooden blocks and natural colors. The collaboration between the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom Jammu and the District Administration Samba aims to revive this fading art by involving young artists and traditional artisans.
Participants must submit their original entries, free from copyrighted or trademarked images and logos, on the jk.mygov.in portal by June 10, 2023. ADDC Samba, Rajinder Singh, and other district officers were also present at the event.
