GDC Kathua celebrates World Environment Day with Plantation Drive
6/5/2023 10:51:35 PM
Early Times Report
KATHUA, June 5: NSS units at GDC Kathua organized a Plantation Drive and Save Environment Pledge ceremony to commemorate World Environment Day. Volunteers enthusiastically planted numerous saplings in the NSS Park, actively supporting the Save Earth Save Environment campaign. In line with their previous meeting decisions, NSS Units also initiated the "each one plant one" campaign in their respective localities, such as Jarai, Khokhyal, Logate, and Hiranagar. This year's global theme, "Beat Plastic Pollution and Ecosystem Restoration," guided the event, held under the auspices of Mission LIFE and Azaadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav.
Volunteers planted a variety of saplings, including medicinal, fruit-bearing, and shady trees, in different locations within the park and nearby villages. Following the plantation drive, volunteers engaged with college students and local community members, urging them to plant saplings for each family member during the upcoming monsoon season. Emphasizing the importance of nurturing the planted trees, volunteers drew parallels between tree care and nurturing their own children.
A pledge ceremony was conducted, with numerous students vowing to combat plastic pollution and protect the environment. Senior NSS volunteer Pratham Sharma read out the pledge at the college, while other volunteers did the same in their respective villages. The local community appreciated the volunteers for organizing the plantation drive, pledge ceremony, and awareness campaign in their area. The objective behind this campaign was to promote the Clean India - Green India initiative by planting saplings within and outside the college campus, aligning with the year's theme of "Beat Plastic Pollution and Ecosystem Restoration."
Over a hundred saplings, including flowering plants, ornamental species, medicinal plants, and shady trees, were planted by the dedicated volunteers. The campaign received guidance from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. The event was held under the patronage of Principal Prof. Seema Mir and supervised by Prof. Manmohan Singh, Prof. Neha Bandral, and Dr. Suresh Kumar Sharma, NSS Programme Officers at Government Degree College Kathua.
