Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 14: The Department of Students Welfare at the University of Jammu paid heartfelt tribute to Brigadier Rajinder Singh, MVC (Mahavir Chakra), on the occasion of his Birth Anniversary. Dean of Students Welfare, Prof. Prakash Antahal, announced that the department will be installing a life-size bust sculpture of Brigadier Rajinder Singh near the Brigadier Rajinder Singh Auditorium to honor his bravery. This sculpture, created by Mr. Jaswinder Singh, an alumnus of Display Your Talent, will serve as an inspiration for young students.
Brigadier Rajinder Singh Jamwal, also known as the "Saviour of Kashmir," was a distinguished officer in the Jammu and Kashmir State Forces. During the First Kashmir War, he valiantly led a small contingent of around 200 men and successfully delayed the advance of a much larger force of Pakistani tribal raiders, backed by the Pakistani Army, near Uri. This heroic stand allowed Maharaja Hari Singh to accede to India, leading to the deployment of Indian forces for the protection of Kashmir. Tragically, Brigadier Rajinder Singh lost his life in the line of duty. In recognition of his exceptional courage, he was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India's second-highest military decoration, on December 30, 1949. He holds the distinction of being the first Indian to receive this prestigious honor.
The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Prof. Prakash Antahal (DSW), Prof. Monika Sethi, Chairperson of the Campus Cultural Committee, Prof. Vishav Raksha, former Chairperson of the Campus Cultural Committee, Prof. Sarika Manhas, Co-Chairperson of the Campus Cultural Committee, Dr. Anil Gupta, Associate Dean (SW), Dr. Garima Gupta and Dr. Pritam Singh, Assistant Deans (SW), Dr. Shallu Sharma and Dr. A.R.
