| Jammu-Kashmir hyphen getting shorter for better | | | SANDEEP BHATT Jammu, Jan 19: Two months after Darbar Move, the people of ‘Jammu and Kashmir’ seem to have put behind the baggage of animosity which erupted in the summer of 2008 when vested interests stirred the regional sentiments on Amarnath land row. The annual ‘Darbar Move’ may be expensive annual affairs for a poor state like Jammu and Kashmir but it certainly comes as a blessing of cohesion, some times. It is such a boon adopted by the Dogra rulers for the state Government employees that till date no finger has been raised against it. What to say of employees even non-officals of both the regions used to visit Kashmir in summer and Jammu in winter months. When the land row agitation was at its height last summer, the Jammu and Kashmir regions appeared falling apart. Earlier also, there was a temporary halt of the seasonal movement of people from either regions during 1990-92 due to spread of militancy in the Valley same thing happened during the months of June, July and August 2008 when both summer and winter capitals witnessed hartals, dharnas, curfew and loss of innocent lives in both the regions against the transfer of land at Baltal to the Amarnath Shine Board. “I used to come here since 1969-70 along with my husband to avoid Icy winds of Chilay-klan, Chilay khrud and Chilay baccha and the coldest months of winters season. I enjoy here like any thing”, says Raja Begum, mother of a secretariat employee. She adds: “We always felt comfortable and secure in Jammu and never felt like being in any alien place”. The Amarnath land row did sow some seeds of hatred among the masses of both the regions, but now after the smooth conduct of Assembly elections, things have changed for better. Nagendra Jamwal, a Jammuite, while talking to this report said, that the land row agitation did spoil the relations between the people of two regions to some extent, and it will take a long time to bridge the gap between the. But I am hopeful that the good sense will prevails on the masses, both from Kashmir and Jammu region and the people will respect each others sentiments and emotions. Abdul Qadir, a businessman from Kashmir valley, said that the land row agitation was created by the politicians just to score points and create hatred among the masses. As a businessman, I am interested in business and have good relations with the business community in Jammu and will continue to have so. Now, the things are getting normal and people have started visiting each others places. Needhi Chopra, a University student form Jammu sitting aside with a student Rafiqa Jan from Kashmir University, in university campus, said that the relations between the students is as good as before and feeing that the wedge which has been created by the selfish politicians is now diminishing fast and now after the darbar move things are getting fast to normalization. Rakesh Singh and Zahoor Ahamed both drivers Plying on Jammu-Srinagar national highway, said that the relations between the people of two regions is fast improving and the mistrust and suspicion created by selfish people remains no more. We both are feeling safe driving our vehicles to Jammu to Srinagar and Vice-Versa. |
