Cultural artists mesmerise CM

JAMMU, JAN 19: After watching an entertainment and cultural extravaganza hosted by Academy of Art and Culture, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that he traveled widely across the world but never saw such a talent.
Omar said that Jammu and Kashmir has a rich and composite cultural heritage which needs to be showcased not only within the country but across the globe.
The Chief Minister was addressing at the inaugural function of the two-day cultural programme – Dhanak-II – organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, in collaboration with Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the First War of Independence, at Abhinav Theatre, here this evening.
Abdullah said that he has travelled far and wide but nowhere witnessed such a composite cultural richness and diversity as is evident in Jammu and Kashmir and called upon everyone to further strengthen and enrich this uniqueness of the State. He said that what the artistes presented this evening in a magnificent way is the real face of the State and not that unfortunate phase which people saw during the past two decades.
Lauding the performance of the artistes, the Chief Minister said that they have made us to revisit the cultural canvass of the State through their riveting performance and talent. He said the State has tremendous talent that needs to be channelised and showcased effectively and also suggested for keeping art and culture away from politics.
Abdullah appreciated the organisers for presenting an excellent programme. He assured that everything possible would be done to strengthen and promote culture.
Jora thanked the Chief Minister for inaugurating the programme and lauded the Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Cultural Academy for organizing the function. He said the programme helped in highlighting the richness of the cultural heritage of all the three regions of the State. He also congratulated the artistes for putting in a spectacular performance.
Earlier in his address, Mr. Manhas, while welcoming the Chief Minister and other dignitaries, dwelt on the aims and objectives of organizing DHANAK-II. He said that the first edition of the programme was organized in Leh in October. He also gave details about the initiatives being taken by the Academy for promotion of various languages, art and culture in the State.
Later, the vote of thanks was presented by Mr. K. C. Gupta on behalf of the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
The cultural items presented on the occasion were geetru, baand pather, jabroo, gojri and pahari folk songs, jagrana, dhakku, chhakri, dhamali and gidda. The jam-packed audience was spellbound by the performance of the artistes on the occasion.
The Minister for Tourism and Culture, Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora, former Chief Minister, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Political Advisor to Chief Minister, Mr. Devender Singh Rana, legislator, Mr. Nasir Aslam Wani, Commissioner/Secretary, Culture, Mr. N. K. Verma, Secretary, Cultural Academy, Mr. Zaffar Iqbal Manhas, senior officers, a galaxy of artistes from all the three regions of the State, prominent citizens and art and culture lovers were among those who attended the function.
