Students intensify stir for open choice
1/19/2009 11:42:59 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Jan 19: While University examination dates are approaching near; students from different city colleges have intensified their stir for the open choice on syllabus. Some students organizations are claiming that their syllabus could not be completed due to two-month long agitation in Jammu in summer of 2008. However, the Colleges have submitted report to the government saying syllabus was completed well in time by taking extra classes.
Agitating students of different degree colleges in Jammu, demanding open choice, were dispersed by heavy posse of police force outside Jammu university campus on Monday.
Intensifying their agitation in support of their demand, the students belonging to GGM Science College, Commerce College and MAM College had earlier gathered outside the Jammu university campus after boycotting their routine classes.
Several students suffered minor injuries in the scuffle with the policemen.
The slogan shouting students were grouping outside the campus when large number of police men took control of the situation and dispersed the students.
The police men also caught hold of student leaders and forced the students to move out in different directions away from the main university entrance.
Governor NN Vohra also visited the university campus for the first time after taking over the charge as Chancellor of the University. He visited various departments in the university and interacted with faculty members and the students during his visit. He was escorted by University Vice Chancellor Prof Varun Shani and senior faculty of the university.
Condemning heavy presence of police force outside the Jammu university campus several student leaders alleged that the concerned authorities had virtually turned the area outside the university in to a fortress by way of deployment of thick columns of para military forces. The student leaders once again made it clear to the Jammu university authorities that the students demand is genuine and not out of context as they have suffered during the two month long agitation. The student leaders alleged that the teachers are to be blamed for their plight as they are furnishing misleading and half cooked information to the university authorities over the status of course completion. The student leaders alleged that the teachers in an attempt to hide their own inefficiency is feeding wrong information to the higher authorities and making a case against the students that they are agitating without any cause and seeking open choice by way of resorting to pressure tactics. The student leaders during their successive dialogue with the university authorities have apprised them with the status of course completion but they have not received any favourable response.
