| Omar, 28 others to set foot on assembly floor first time | | New MLAs being sworn in today, Rather to take oath sixth time in row | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 19: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and some two dozen other legislators will set foot on the floor of legislative assembly first time ever as members of the eleventh Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly will be administered oath here tomorrow morning. Incidentally the swearing in of new MLAs come on the day when Barack Hussein Obama takes over as next President of the United States of America. Chaudhary Mohammad Aslam will administer oath to 86 members including the 44 members of the ruling coalition partners in the Assembly Complex in Jammu. While state assembly comprises of 87-members, the number of MLAs currently stands at 86, as National Conference President Farooq Abdullah has resigned from the Hazratbal constituency while retaining the Sonawar constituency. Farooq Abdullah emerged as winner from both the constituencies. Among the new legislators elected to the lower house include lone woman member, Shamima Firdous, who created history in its own right by being the first Muslim candidate to win from Habba-kadal constituency of Srinagar district. Apart from Shamima Firdous, the first timers include Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, NC's Nasir Aslam Wani alias Sogami, who won from Amira Kadal, Peer Afaq (NC- Zadibal), Feroz Ahmad ( NC-Zanaskar), Nizamuddin Bhat (PDP-Bandipora), Shafi Ahmad Wani (PDP-Beerwah), Abdul Rashid Sheikh ( Ind-Langate), Irfan Ahmad Shah (NC-Batmaloo), Basharat Bukhari (PDP- Sangrama), Abdul Haq Khan (PDP- Lolab) and Mohammad Ashraf Ganie (NC- Sopore). Prominent among other first time winners are Bharat Bhushan Bodhi, Choudhary Sukhnandan Kumar, Prof Gharu Ram (all of BJP), Choudhary Zulfikar Ali (PDP) Vikar Rasool, Ashok Kumar Bhagat and Krishan Chander (all from Congress), Ajaz Ahmed Jan from National Conference. Besides, the first timers, incumbent Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather, will take oath for the sixth consecutive time. Rather has won from Charar-e-Sharief constituency. He was first elected in 1977 when the NC joined the election fray following Sheikh-Indira accord. Rather later represented the constituency in 1983, 1987, 1996 and 2002. Four NC members, Mian Altaf (Kangan), Mubarak Gul (Eidgah) and Ali Muhammad Sagar (Khanyar) Kafeel-ur-Rehman (Karnah) will be taking oath for the fourth time while, State secretary of the Communist Party of India (M) Mohammad Yousuf Targami (Kulgam) will be taking oath for the third time. Apart from political leaders, a large number of police and civil officers and prominent citizens are expected to attend the event. |
