| Vohra asks ex-Servicemen to avail self employment schemes | | | Early TImes Report
JAMMU, JANUARY 20- Emphasizing the crucial importance of the resettlement and rehabilitation of ex-servicemen after their retirements at a young age, Governor Mr. N. N. Vohra, today observed that setting up of self-income generating units could be a viable approach to their resettlement, particularly as it would not be possible for the State Government to provide jobs for an ever increasing number of ex-servicemen. During his visit to the Rajya Sainik Welfare Board, here this morning, the Governor said that numerous schemes under the Self Employment Programme have been tailored with attractive incentives from the Central and the State Governments for launching income generating units. “By doing so, the ex-Servicemen can contribute immensely in enhancing the productivity and generating jobs for others apart from achieving self-reliance for themselves”, Mr Vohra said, urging the Sainik Board to create awareness about these Schemes and assist the intended ex-Servicemen in securing the required technical expertise and the financial assistance from the relevent institutions. He said ex-Servicemen could set up profitable ventures which attract subsidies, as for example poultry farming, bee-keeping, dairy, mushroom cultivation, etc which had an immense potential and scope in the State. As regards creating infrastructural facilities for ex-Servicemen in the urban and semi-urban areas of the State, Mr Vohra exhorted the Director of the Board, Brig (Retd) Langeh Board to draw up futuristic plans for creating commercial assets to generate recurring income for the welfare of the targeted sections of the society. “Generation of resources is a pre-requisite for broadening the ambit of the various welfare activities”, he said while stressing the need for drawing up a blue-print containing norms and conditions about renting out the commercial assets of the Board.
Vohra stressed the need for the Board ensuring a judicious use of the grants meant for the ex-Servicemen, war-widows and children of the martyr’s. He suggested launching of coaching facilities for the enterprising wards of the ex-Servicemen to enable them to be selected for admission to the join elite services like National Defence Academy and Indian Military Academy. For this purpose, the services of the retired Army officers could be utilized as resource persons or as faculties at the Coaching Centres. The Governor also stressed the need for intensifying the Flag Day funds-collection drive and made a fervent appeal to the people to liberally contribute towards this noble cause. He said that the welfare of the ex-Servicemen and their families is the responsibility of the society as a whole. The Director, Rajya Sainik Welfare Board, Brigadier (Retd) R. S. Langeh, gave an overview of the activities of the Board, which is looking after the welfare of 84,439 ex-Servicemen. He said that the Board has established 12 Sainik Sarais at various district headquarters and is manning five Boys Hostels, each at Jammu, Kathua, Samba, Akhnoor and Udhampur and that the work on two more Sainik Bhavans is proceeding apace at Srinagar and Rajouri. Langeh gave an overview of several concessions and benefits accruing to the ex-Servicemen under various schemes of the State and the Central Governments. Later, the Governor visited the Boys Hostel, situated in the periphery of the Sainik Welfare office at Jammu and interacted with the resident students. He also visited the office of the Ex-servicemen League (NGO) and enquired about its activities. The organization has launched several schemes for the welfare of the retired Army personnel.
