KVK Reasi trains farmers on natural farming for ecological agriculture

REASI, June 20: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, organized a training program on "Natural Farming: The Way Forward" in collaboration with Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J). The program, held in Dhanwa village of Pouni block in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, aimed to educate and guide farmers on the importance of natural farming for ecological agriculture.
Dr. Banarsi Lal, Senior Scientist & Head of KVK Reasi, warmly welcomed the participants and highlighted the objectives of the program. He emphasized the potential of natural farming in hilly areas and its ability to generate higher income and employment opportunities for farmers. Dr. Lal discussed the four pillars of natural farming and stressed the need for a cluster-based approach and transition strategy in implementing natural farming practices.
Dr. Suja Nabi Qureshi, Scientist, explained that natural farming is an agro-ecology based approach that integrates crops, trees, livestock, and functional biodiversity. He highlighted the cost-saving benefits of natural farming, as it eliminates the need for external agro-inputs. Dr. Qureshi also emphasized the significance of using indigenous seeds and bioinoculants as catalysts for natural farming. The scientists provided practical demonstrations on the preparation of natural farming inputs such as Jeevamrit, Beejamrit, Panchgavya, Ghanjeevamrit, and discussed techniques like mulching, Acchadana, and the use of biocontrol agents in natural farming. The program included a field visit for organic farmers, allowing them to witness and learn from practical examples. The farmers expressed their gratitude to KVK Reasi for organizing the informative program.
